Bone mineral density in the normal Iranian population: a comparison with American reference data

چکیده
Summary In order to establish the normative curves for BMD in Iranian individuals, we measured BMDs at the lumbar spine and femoral regions of 760 women and 632 men using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. This study provides a baseline normative for Iranian individuals. BMD values of Iranian subjects were generally lower than those of the American population. Introduction In order to establish the normative curves for BMD in Iranian individuals, we measured BMDs at the lumbar spine and femoral regions. The BMDs at the lumbar spine and femoral neck regions of 760 women and 632 men, which were selected by multi-stage random sampling, were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results The peak bone mass in the males and females at the lumbar spine was reached around the age of 28.5±1.5 and 30±2 and at the neck of the femur was reached around the age of 24±1.5 and 33±2. About 16.4% and 3% of men aged 50 and older were osteoporotic according to American reference data, respectively, but using Iranian normative data for L2-L4 and the neck of the femur, the corresponding values were only 13.4% and 2.1%. Using American reference data, the respective values in women aged 50 and older for the same regions were 44.4% and 12%, whereas according to the Iranian normative data, the corresponding rates were 41.1% and 10.4%. Conclusions This study provides a baseline normative for Iranian individuals. Due to the differences in ethnicity, diet, lifestyle, and small body size, BMD values of Iranian subjects were generally lower than those of the American population.

The Correlation between Trabecular Bone Score and Lumbar Spine Bone Mineral Density in Patients with Normal and High Body Mass Index
Background: Trabecular bone score (TBS) measures the underlying quality of bone texture using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) images. The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) and TBS, and subsequently determine whether the association varies with the body mass index (BMI). Methods: Data from 548 patients were collected a...
متن کاملComparison of Singh index accuracy and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry bone mineral density measurement for evaluating osteoporosis
Background: The Singh index is an inexpensive simple method to evaluate bone density, commonly used to assess osteoporosis is based on the radiological appearance of the trabecular bone structure of the proximal femur on a plain antero-posterior (AP) radiograph. The purpose of this study was to compare between Singh index and bone mineral density measurement using dual energy X-ray abs...
متن کاملNormative data and percentile curves of bone mineral density in healthy Iranian children aged 9-18 years.
UNLABELLED We provide the first reference values for bone mineral content and bone mineral density according to age and sex in Iranian children and adolescents. The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D was high, and levels of physical activity were low in our sample. Multiple regression analyses showed age, BMI, and Tanner stage to be the main indicators of bone mineral apparent density. PURPOSE N...
متن کاملComparison of Bone Mineral Density Measured by Dual X-ray, Axial Dual-energy Photon X-ray Absorptiometry and Laser Absorptiometry of Calcaneus
The objective of this study was to validate the use of bone mineral measurements of the calcaneus bone by dual X-ray and laser (DXL) in a cross-sectional study carried out in an osteoporosis clinic. Measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) at proximal femur and spine were obtained by dual-energy photon X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Osteoporosis was defined by a DEXA T-score <-2.5 at the femora...
